Suzanne Vromen is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Bard College where she taught for 22 years. She was living in Belgium when the Germans invaded the country in 1940. After a year under Nazi occupation, she and her family succeeded in escaping and finding refuge in the Belgian Congo. Professor Vromen was sent to school in a convent because there were no secular educational institutions in existence. She received her M.S. in Urban Planning from Columbia University, M.A. and PhD in Sociology from New York University. She is the author of Hidden Children of the Holocaust: Belgian Nuns and Their Daring Rescue of Young Jews from the Nazis recently published by Oxford University Press (2008).
